Mud Flat of Haenam

Mud flat area of Chunam is 1054.1km2. Chunam includes Yellow Sea and South Sea geographically and based on Haenamgak of Haenam-gun, it is divided into west coast and south coast.

This area represents relatively complicated aspects as small bays and islands near to land are scattered and when dividing the South Sea of Chunam by each administrative section, it is divided into Wando-gun, Ganjin-gun, Goheung-gun, Yeocheon-gun including eastern side of Haenamgak of Haenam-gun. In case of Haenam-gun and Gangjin-gun, mud flat is distributed along inland coastal line and in the inland coast of Haenam-gun adjacent to northern side of Wando, relatively wide mud flat is distributed.

About 10 places of big and small mud flat of Haenam had been reclaimed since Japanese rule and the total area of remained mud flat is 49.2km2 and reclaimed area is over app. 250km2. In a test of COD improvement effect of mud flat against sea water of 1L for mud flat of Bukpyeong-myeon, Haenam, purification capacity of mud flat reducing COD by 0.16mg/l on September, 1997, 0.12mg/l on December and 0.23mg/l on March, next year was clarified. In a mud flat survey of southwestern coast in 1997, content of P was represented to be the lowest in reclaimed area of Hwawon-myeon, Haenam-gun and content of total nitrogen (T-N) and organic substance were represented to be high in reclaimed area of Sanee-myeon. In case of appearance of floating plants by each classified group, 20 species were appeared in reclaimed land of Sanee-myeon, 42 species in that of Hwawon-myeon and in reclaimed land of Hwawon-myeon, floating plants were most dominantly appeared. Therefore, when based on index of plants and benthic organism, it is considered that condition of Haenam mud flat is most excellent and diversity of biospecies is the highest.
